WHAT TO EXPECT
Paddling
Your adventure begins with a leisurely paddle along the Huleʻia River, one of Kauai's most scenic waterways. As you glide through the calm water, you'll pass beneath arching trees, through lush rainforest, and alongside protected wetlands that are home to native Hawaiian birds and other wildlife. Along the way, you'll pass Alakoko Fishpond, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond famously linked to the legend of the Menehune, who are said to have built its massive stone wall in a single night.
The quiet pace allows you to take in the beauty of the valley while your guides share stories of the area's history, ecology, culture, and legends.
Hiking
Leaving the river behind, you'll continue on foot along adventurous trails through private Kīpū Ranch, surrounded by lush tropical scenery as you make your way deeper into the valley. The trail leads to Pirate Pool, a secluded freshwater swimming hole with a rope swing, before continuing on to a hidden waterfall tucked into the rainforest.
Swimming
At the pool you'll have time to relax, do a rope swing, swim in the refreshing fresh water, take photos, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
As you make your way back downriver, you'll quickly understand why this hidden corner of Kauai has served as the backdrop for countless films and continues to be one of the island's most treasured landscapes.
Canoe Ride
Sit back and enjoy the ride as our motorized Hawaiian-style canoe carries you back down the Huleʻia River. Instead of retracing your route by paddling upstream and against the wind, you can relax and take in the scenery as you cruise comfortably back toward the river landing.

frequently asked questions
What is the minimum age requirement for this trip?
This tour welcomes guests ages 5 and up. Guests must be able to hike approximately 1.5 miles on uneven rainforest terrain and paddle a tandem kayak for 60 to 90 minutes, and the maximum kayak weight limit is 275 lbs per person. It's an easy, beginner-friendly paddle, making it a great fit for families and first-time kayakers.
Can someone still join if they don't meet the requirements?
Unfortunately, no — everyone on this tour needs to be able to paddle and complete the hike, and the 275-pound kayak weight limit applies to all participants for safety. If someone in your group isn't up for the paddle or hike, our Kīpū Ranch land-based adventures may be a better fit — give us a call and we'll help you find the right experience for everyone.
What health concerns limit participation?
All guests should be comfortable paddling a tandem kayak for 60 to 90 minutes and hiking about 1.5 miles on uneven, sometimes muddy rainforest terrain. The paddle itself is gentle and downwind — rather than kayaking back upstream, the tour wraps up with a peaceful return by twin-hull Hawaiian canoe — but guests with mobility limitations or conditions affected by moderate physical activity should consider whether the hike is right for them. Questions about a specific condition? Give us a call before booking.
Can minors do the tour alone?
No — all minors must be accompanied by an adult on the tour. Guests ages 5–17 are welcome to join as long as they have an adult with them for the full adventure, from the Huleʻia River paddle through the hike, Pirate Pool, and canoe ride back.
